Los Cuatro Pilares de la Mesa
Mesa Unida strengthens its foundation by incorporating a set of four principles, which are recognized as the “Los Cuatro Pilares de la Mesa”. These are the pillars that give la “Mesa” a solid foundation and keep it standing. They serve as a framework for establishing and ensuring its mission and purpose are carried out to the best interest of the Latinx community on campus. Mesa Unida members are required to positively represent Mesa Unida and the Latinx community by conducting themselves according to these pillars at all times.

Cultural Identity/Awareness

As a coalition of Latinx organizations at UCI, Mesa Unida is actively making  an  effective effort to raise awareness  of  current  issues  facing the Latinx culture by having its members and affiliate organizations collectively coordinate and execute events that will help educate not only its members and other Latinx students but also the entire UCI community of the heterogeneity of cultural expression, significance, and value of Latinx culture. Through the understanding of cultural roots and identity, Mesa Unida provides a sense of belonging and admiration for the diversity found within Latinx culture, in addition to fostering understanding and respect for its historical significance.

Educational Enhancement

As a cultural group whose history and role in society has been belittled in the past, today we strive to educate and inform ourselves and the UCI community of the realities of Latin American countries, as well as the capabilities of its people. Since UCI has been named a Hispanic Serving Institute, it is now more than ever that we must collectively use our voices to call for a redefined curriculum that is a better representation  of the heterogeneity of our community. Through the enhancement we will strive to bring awareness to the underrepresentation and belittling of our people. We will strive to achieve these goals by working together with other individuals and organizations not only at UCI but also in our communities.

Student Retention

As a Latinx student organization on the UCI campus, Mesa Unida aims to provide a forum in which students are welcome to openly discuss and address issues affecting Latinx student retention. Mesa Unida will work with other organizations and UCI centers to put on forums and workshops that address academic issues such as time management, study skills, as well as broader concerns like choosing a major, the relevance of education to our community, and establishing an academic support system among Latinx students on campus.

Community Engagement

As part of a broader Latinx community, Mesa Unida empowers the Latinx community by building networks of communication and establishing relationships with surrounding communities. These efforts enable our members to better represent and make adjustments based upon the immediate needs of Latinx. These adjustments allow Mesa Unida members and affiliate organizations to host events, in which anyone and everyone from within and outside the UCI community can engage and be educated.

Mesa Unida supports the Green Dot Initiative and believes power-based personal violence will end when enough people have taken singular actions to help end it. Change happens as people become able to identify risky situations and take actions to confront, interrupt, or prevent acts of power-based personal violence.
